Arrowhead Director Teases Sequel-Level Plans for Helldivers 2

Posted: Dec 29,2025 Source: mmowow

While Helldivers 2 may not have a sequel on the horizon, Arrowhead Game Studios appears far from done evolving the game. Johan Pilestedt, the studio’s Chief Creative Officer, recently shared several ambitious ideas that he describes as “sequel-level” upgrades—features that could significantly reshape the experience without launching Helldivers 3.

Since its release, Helldivers 2 has experienced a turbulent post-launch journey, marked by explosive popularity, community backlash, and ongoing technical struggles. Throughout it all, Arrowhead has maintained close communication with players, gathering feedback and adjusting its development strategy along the way. In recent months, the studio has shifted its focus toward stability, bug fixes, and performance improvements rather than rapid content drops—a move many fans have welcomed.

That change in priorities, however, does not mean new content is off the table.

A Bigger, More Connected Galactic War

During a December 25 Q&A session, Pilestedt elaborated on earlier comments about turning Helldivers 2 into something that feels like its own evolving sequel. One of the most striking ideas he mentioned was the possibility of large-scale, open-world maps. These environments could allow multiple squads to encounter one another organically and cooperate to tackle massive threats together.

Pilestedt also suggested operations where the actions of one team could influence the missions or conditions faced by others. While details were scarce, the vision seems aimed at making the war effort feel more interconnected—less like isolated skirmishes and more like a living, shared battlefield shaped by player decisions.

Eight-Player Squads Still on the Wishlist

Another notable feature Pilestedt acknowledged was the idea of expanding squad sizes to eight players, a long-standing request from the community. This is particularly interesting given that Arrowhead’s CEO previously dismissed larger lobbies earlier this year, citing serious performance concerns that could “kill” the game.

At the time, Helldivers 2 was facing widespread technical issues, especially on PC. Although overall stability has improved since then, lingering bugs remain, making it unclear whether eight-player teams are feasible in the near future—or at all.

Why “Simple” Ideas Aren’t So Simple

Pilestedt also shed light on the challenges behind implementing major features. He explained that ideas which may appear straightforward—such as adding flying vehicles—often require deep systemic changes. These additions can affect everything from engine performance to enemy design and balance, forcing developers to rethink large portions of the game.

Arrowhead has encountered similar hurdles before. The team previously explored underground environments but ultimately backed away, noting that subterranean combat would fundamentally change how Helldivers 2 plays, beyond just technical limitations.

Long-Term Ambitions, Careful Execution

For now, Pilestedt emphasized that the studio’s main priority is refining the core experience players already enjoy. Larger, more disruptive changes are being treated as long-term ambitions rather than immediate updates.

With no Helldivers 3 currently planned, Arrowhead has the freedom to continue expanding and elevating Helldivers 2 over time. While these “sequel-level” ideas may take a while to materialize, they signal a clear intent: the war for Super Earth is far from finished.
