New Soldiers, Old Struggles
Watching a wave of Xbox recruits join the established ranks of PC and PlayStation 5 Helldivers has been fascinating. Missions continue to succeed at a steady rate, and unless a player’s level is obviously low or they announce their inexperience in chat, it’s hard to tell who’s brand-new. What’s most exciting is that these fresh players are stepping into the fight without the background knowledge of veterans, discovering every challenge and surprise Helldivers 2 has to offer for themselves.
A Major Order on the Brink
At the moment, however, they’re being greeted by a dire situation. The game’s latest Major Order is teetering toward failure. While veterans know well the sting of an unfinished objective, the contrast is especially sharp after the community’s legendary victory in a triple Major Order against all three factions. With so much new content and energy around the Xbox launch, the looming collapse of this mission feels like an especially bitter pill—made worse by Arrowhead’s decision to slash ammunition supplies by half.
Lost in the Hype of the Hive
The Major Order, centered on extracting massive amounts of samples, has been overshadowed by the excitement of the Into the Unjust update. Players are understandably absorbed in the dramatic Hive World additions: cavernous levels, new Terminid types like Ruptures and Dragonroaches, and colossal Hive Lords. The thrill of blasting apart terrifying new enemies has clearly taken precedence over gathering samples, and with fewer than 10 hours left, the order’s progress remains far from complete.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Operation Righteous Reclamation’s objectives sound overwhelming at first glance—hundreds of millions of common and rare samples to collect—but experienced Helldivers know the community can rally to hit those marks. Yet at the time of writing, progress sits at just 54.9% of common samples and 47.0% of rare samples, while holding Hellmire is the only box successfully checked. A reward of 55 Warbond Medals isn’t enough to pull focus back from the Hive World’s allure, and the mission’s chances of completion have all but evaporated.
The Ammo Nerf Arrives
As if to cement that fate, Arrowhead has introduced a dispatch halving ammo from supply boxes and pickups. The change lands hardest on players running weapons like the R-36 Eruptor, where every shell already carries heavy weight. For energy weapon users, such as those wielding the LAS-16 Sickle, the nerf may feel negligible. But for many, especially those relying on high-damage conventional firearms, it’s a punishing adjustment that arrived at the worst possible moment.
Failure Isn’t Defeat
Still, one failed Major Order doesn’t spell doom for the Galactic War. Veterans know setbacks are inevitable, and newcomers will soon learn that the ebb and flow of victories and losses is part of Helldivers 2’s larger drama. The community has survived worse, and tomorrow’s orders may lead to another triumph. The ammo nerf is frustrating, but in the end, the fight for democracy was never meant to be easy.
