Helldivers 2 Doesn’t Need a Massive Bot Update—At Least Not Yet

Helldivers 2 has been enjoying strong momentum in recent months. The third-person co-op shooter finally made its way to Xbox last month, and September’s Into the Unjust update introduced even more chaos for players to deal with. Since its release earlier this year, the game has consistently pushed players with new challenges, and Into the Unjust doubled down by introducing a horrifying new wave of Terminid enemies.

Among the latest additions are the Rupture Spewer, Rupture Warrior, and Rupture Charger, all of which attack from beneath the ground. As if that weren’t enough, the Dragonroach—a grotesque insectoid that soars through the sky—has given fans another reason to fear every mission drop. These new enemies highlight how Arrowhead Game Studios continues to keep the action fresh. But while players are likely already imagining what terrifying new Automaton variants could be next, it may be too soon to shine the spotlight back on the bots.

Giving the Bugs Time to Breathe

In recent days, Automatons have returned to the spotlight as players focus on liberating the mines of Mintoria. If history is anything to go by, a major Automaton overhaul could be waiting just around the corner. Earlier leaks even hinted at a possible campaign on the Automaton homeworld of New Cyberstan—though those rumors remain unverified and should be treated with caution.

Even if more powerful Automatons are inevitable, the new Terminids deserve to remain the center of attention for a while longer. Into the Unjust dramatically expanded their variety and threat level, and shifting focus too quickly could risk overshadowing Arrowhead’s hard work. Worse, rushing content could cause Helldivers 2 to feel bloated, or stretch the studio thin as it tries to maintain its fast-paced update cycle.

Managing Expectations in a Live-Service Game

With the arrival of the Xbox community, Helldivers 2’s player base is larger than ever. The recent stream of content—ranging from Into the Unjust to the Dirt Devils Premium Warbond and even the Halo-inspired ODST Legendary Warbond crossover—has set a high bar for what players expect. Dropping another faction-defining update centered on Automatons right away might unintentionally give newcomers the impression that Helldivers 2 will deliver massive expansions at a constant pace.

Arrowhead has so far managed the live-service model impressively well, treating it less like a grind and more like an evolving, interactive experience. Each new update has expanded the game’s world and kept fans engaged without overwhelming them. That balance is delicate, and preserving it means resisting the temptation to reveal the Automatons’ next big evolution too early.

A Bright Road Ahead

Helldivers 2 took the industry by surprise when it launched at the start of 2024, and it has since solidified itself as one of the standout games of the year. Now, heading into its second year, the shooter shows no signs of slowing down. Arrowhead has found a rhythm in delivering meaningful updates that keep the community invested, while still leaving plenty of room for future surprises.

Stronger Automatons will almost certainly join the fight eventually—few doubt that the faction will evolve into a bigger threat down the line. But for now, patience is the smartest path. Letting the chaos of Into the Unjust settle and allowing the Terminids’ new forms to dominate the battlefield ensures the game’s pacing remains strong. When the Automatons do finally return in force, it will feel like a natural escalation rather than an overcrowded update schedule.

In short, Helldivers 2’s future looks incredibly promising. But Arrowhead should resist the urge to rush into its next big Automaton overhaul. Sometimes, the best strategy is letting players fully absorb the terror that’s already been unleashed before raising the stakes once again.
