Helldivers 2 Has No Sequel Plans — And That’s Not a Problem

A Live-Service Game with a Finite Shelf Life

As with any live-service title, Helldivers 2 inevitably has a shelf life. Whether that lifespan will be lengthy and fulfilling remains uncertain, and conversations about the possibility of a threequel are bound to persist. With the game approaching its second anniversary in just five months, it continues to grapple with technical and performance issues that affect countless players. Even so, Helldivers 2 is in a promising position to tackle these challenges head-on while consistently delivering quality content through its updates and Warbonds.

Recently, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani addressed fan speculation directly, confirming that no Helldivers 3 is in development. Players currently enjoying the democratic carnage against Terminids, Automatons, and the Illuminate can rest easy—there’s no need to pack up and move on to a new entry anytime soon. This is a blessing in disguise, as Arrowhead still has plenty to accomplish with Helldivers 2 before even thinking about what comes next.

The Game Hasn’t Hit Its Peak—and Shouldn’t Be Rushed

Despite its success, Helldivers 2 has long struggled with crashing, freezing, framerate drops, and shader complications that blemish the experience. Talk of a sequel feels premature, even laughable, given the current state of the game. Arrowhead is well aware of these issues and is actively working to resolve them.

An update scheduled for the latter half of October aims to address several key problems:

  • Critical crash fixes
  • Weapon audio issues during missions
  • Minor performance improvements
  • Fixes for long-standing bugs like Charger footstep sounds and mid-mission audio cutouts
  • No more landing on caves
  • A balance pass to fine-tune gameplay

Arrowhead has also promised to double down on transparency, polish, and communication as it works toward larger, long-term fixes. These short-term improvements should go a long way toward lifting the game’s public reception, especially among frustrated players.

Player Numbers Show Ongoing Strength

Despite its ups and downs, Helldivers 2 remains remarkably active. As of now, over 153,000 players are engaged across platforms through crossplay, with nearly 66,000 on Steam alone. Steam reviews currently sit at a “Mixed” rating from over 14,000 recent reviews, with 66% positive.

If any multiplayer shooter has experienced a turbulent roller coaster ride on Steam, it’s Helldivers 2. But crucially, the game hasn’t derailed — it’s still standing strong, supported by a dedicated community and a steady stream of new content.

Leaks Point to a Wealth of Future Content

Some fans worry that Helldivers 2 may have already reached its content ceiling, as it features three enemy factions just like its predecessor. However, leaks from reliable sources like IronS1ghts suggest otherwise. Alleged upcoming content includes:

  • New and returning Illuminate units, such as Cultists and Council Members
  • Cyberstan, the Automaton homeworld, or a return to the Cyborgs’ territory
  • Ship customization options
  • Factory worlds and even a “planet-sized superweapon” reminiscent of Star Wars’ Death Star

If even a portion of these leaks prove true, Helldivers 2 has years of potential content ahead. For now, Arrowhead is rightly prioritizing technical stability—a necessary step before layering on ambitious new features.

A Potential Sequel Would Need to Justify Itself

Helldivers 2 already made a bold leap from the first game’s isometric style to third-person combat, making the sequel feel truly warranted. For a hypothetical Helldivers 3 to make sense, it would need to represent an equally significant and meaningful evolution, not just an incremental upgrade.

With a Helldivers movie in development that shares the game’s distinctive tone and aesthetic, it’s clear that a long-term investment is underway. Arrowhead’s focus on extending Helldivers 2’s lifespan through robust post-launch content seems not only wise but necessary to cement the franchise across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

The Road Ahead Looks Bright

Players have made their demands clear—performance improvements are a top priority, but they’re also eager for more content. Desired additions include melee combat enhancements, broader customization options, crossovers with franchises like Halo: ODST and Killzone, and more callbacks to the original game.

It will be fascinating to see where Helldivers 2 stands a year from now. If Arrowhead can balance technical refinement with content expansion, there’s no doubt the game can thrive for years—without needing a sequel anytime soon.
