Helldivers 2’s Megamaps Will Rise or Fall on One Crucial Feature

As Helldivers 2 approaches its second anniversary, Arrowhead Game Studios continues to hint that the game’s evolution is far from over. During a recent Q&A session on the official Helldivers 2 Discord, Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt revealed that so-called “megamaps” could be part of the game’s future. Alongside this idea, Pilestedt also floated the possibility of larger squad sizes, signaling what could be the most dramatic shift in the game’s design since launch.

For now, these ideas remain purely hypothetical. The discussion around megamaps and expanded squads emerged when Pilestedt was asked about the possibility of a sequel. Rather than moving on to a third entry, Arrowhead appears more interested in refining and expanding Helldivers 2 itself. Given the game’s massive player base and continued success, focusing on long-term improvements makes far more sense than starting from scratch.

The thought of larger maps and bigger squads is undeniably exciting, but if Arrowhead ever moves forward with this vision, the studio will have to confront one major issue head-on: vehicles.

Why Vehicles Will Make or Break Helldivers 2’s Megamaps

While Helldivers 2 already features maps of varying sizes, some are quite expansive as it is. The idea of megamaps takes that scale to an entirely new level. Covering significantly more ground could benefit from increased squad sizes, but it would also amplify the game’s trademark chaos. More players mean more friendly fire incidents, more overlapping Stratagems, and even greater battlefield disorder.

Vehicles could help balance that chaos—if they are handled correctly. Although vehicles have been part of Helldivers 2 since launch, they currently feel more like novelties than essential tools. In most missions, they serve as short-lived support options rather than a meaningful part of the core gameplay loop. Many players have long hoped that vehicles would eventually play a larger role, and megamaps could finally justify that evolution.

Not every player enjoys vehicle-focused gameplay, but Helldivers 2 should at least provide meaningful opportunities for those who do. If Arrowhead introduces massive maps without reworking vehicles, the result could be tedious traversal rather than exciting large-scale warfare.

How Arrowhead Could Improve Vehicle Gameplay

If megamaps become reality, vehicles will need a significant overhaul. Some potential improvements include:

  • Deeper vehicle customization options
  • Improved physics and handling
  • The ability to replenish vehicle and mech ammunition
  • Reduced cooldowns between vehicle deployments
  • Entirely new vehicle types
  • The return of classic vehicles from the original Helldivers

At present, vehicles feel like disposable tools rather than core mechanics. While additions like Exosuits and the M-102 Fast Recon Vehicle were welcome at the time, the overall vehicle roster now feels limited compared to the game’s expanding ambitions.

Megamaps Demand Vehicles as a Core Feature

Truly massive maps would force Arrowhead to make vehicles central to gameplay, at least on certain mission types. Traversing enormous environments on foot would quickly become impractical, making reliable transport from Point A to Point B essential rather than optional.

There are signs that Arrowhead may already be thinking along these lines. Design Director Niklas Malmborg has previously confirmed that the team wants to revisit vehicle design, which suggests that future updates could bring meaningful changes. Additionally, recent datamining leaks have pointed to the possible arrival of new vehicles alongside the long-rumored Cyberstan content.

According to these leaks, players may eventually see an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) and a tank strongly resembling the Bastion tank from the original Helldivers. While none of this has been officially confirmed, it has fueled speculation that a major vehicle-focused update could be on the horizon.

Megamaps and Larger Squads Could Redefine Helldivers 2

Since its launch in early 2024, Helldivers 2 has consistently surprised its community. From the sudden arrival of the Illuminate to battles taking place on Super Earth itself, Arrowhead has demonstrated how a live-service model can enhance a game rather than exploit it.

To keep players engaged, the studio must continue to scale up its ideas. Megamaps and larger squads would do exactly that, pushing Helldivers 2 into uncharted territory. However, whether this bold vision succeeds or fails will depend largely on how Arrowhead reimagines vehicles. If done right, megamaps could become one of the most transformative additions the game has ever seen.
