Hoenn Starters Get Megas Again—With Restrictions

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Brings Back Hoenn Starter Megas — But With a Major Drawback

The Mega Dimension DLC for Pokemon Legends: Z-A launches tomorrow, and The Pokemon Company has finally confirmed that the beloved Hoenn starters—and their Mega Evolutions—are officially returning. However, players excited to Mega Evolve Sceptile, Blaziken, or Swampert right away may want to temper expectations. Their return comes with a significant catch.

This DLC arrives roughly two months after the base game’s release and brings a wide range of new features to explore. Players will dive into the bizarre alternate world of Hyperspace Lumiose, powered by Hoopa’s dimensional abilities. Hoopa itself gets a boost through a quirky new donut-baking minigame that enhances its powers. Alongside this are newly added content pieces: a temporary level cap increase that allows Pokémon to surpass level 100, a series of progression challenges inside Hyperspace Lumiose, tough Rogue Mega Evolution boss fights, and nearly 20 brand-new exclusive Mega Evolutions.

Assuming recent leaks hold true, the Mega Dimension DLC is poised to offer 19 never-before-seen Mega forms, including some tied to Legendary and Mythical Pokémon such as Darkrai, Heatran, Zeraora, and Magearna. Meanwhile, all previously existing Mega Evolutions are expected to return, which now has been reinforced by official confirmation that Mega Sceptile, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Swampert will indeed be included.

Farewell to Mega Sceptile, Swampert, and Blaziken... At Least For Now

The Hoenn starters—Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip—are among the most iconic Pokémon in the franchise, and their absence at Z-A’s launch left many longtime fans disappointed. With other major Hoenn Pokémon like Rayquaza, Latias, and Latios missing as well, players hoped they would eventually be reintroduced, and that hope has now paid off. The three starters and their Mega forms are returning—but with a restriction that will frustrate many.

Their Mega Stones will only be obtainable through online ranked battle rewards, following the same model used for the Kalos starter Mega Stones earlier in the game’s lifecycle. The release schedule is as follows:

  • Sceptilite / Mega Sceptile → Seasons 5, 6, and 7
  • Swampertite / Mega Swampert → Seasons 6 and 7
  • Blazikenite / Mega Blaziken → Season 7

For players keeping track, this means there's a gap between the current Season 3 and when the first Hoenn Mega becomes accessible. Season 4 is dedicated entirely to Baxcalibur’s Mega Stone, kicking off December 17. Since each ranked season lasts around three weeks, the earliest Hoenn Mega Stone won’t drop until early January—likely January 7 or 8, 2026.

This timing is especially disappointing for players eager to bring their favorite Hoenn Mega Pokémon into tomorrow’s DLC adventure. Blaziken fans, in particular, face a long wait: Blazikenite won’t be available until February 18, 2026, more than two months after the DLC launches.

Unless Game Freak changes the seasonal reward structure—which seems unlikely—players will simply have to wait. On the brighter side, the rank requirements for earning Mega Stones have become significantly easier compared to Season 1, meaning that once available, Sceptilite, Swampertite, and Blazikenite should be fairly quick to obtain.
