Mega Dimension Expansion Heads to Stores

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s paid DLC expansion, Mega Dimension, originally launched in 2025 for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, is now set to receive a boxed retail release. The expansion builds on the base game’s storyline while introducing new features, including additional Mega Evolutions that were not present at launch.

A Return to Lumiose City and Mega Evolution

As the latest mainline entry in the Pokemon series, Pokemon Legends: Z-A takes place entirely within Lumiose City, a location first introduced in Pokemon X and Y. The city became a fan favorite and even appeared as a stage in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Mega Evolution, which debuted in the 2013 3DS titles, makes a major comeback in Z-A. The game introduces new Mega forms for several popular Pokemon, including Dragonite and Greninja. Some of these new Mega Evolutions have already started appearing in the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

Release Date and Box Details

According to Nintendo’s Malaysian website, the boxed version of the Mega Dimension DLC will be available in stores on March 19. The packaging features Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, both introduced in the expansion. However, no official announcements have been made for other regions, including North America.

Code-in-Box Instead of Full Physical Release

Unlike previous titles such as Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which offered physical editions bundling the base game and DLC on a single cartridge, this version will not include the content directly. Instead, it will contain a download code that can be redeemed via the eShop for either the Switch or Switch 2 version of the game.

While this may disappoint collectors who prefer true physical copies, the boxed format still provides a convenient option for gifting.

Possibility of More DLC

In recent weeks, fans have speculated about whether Pokemon Legends: Z-A might receive additional DLC. Even after completing the Mega Dimension storyline, some plot threads remain unresolved. With Pokemon Winds and Waves not expected until 2027 on Switch 2, another expansion could help keep players engaged.

Since this release is not a complete physical edition, it leaves open the possibility that more DLC could still be on the way.

Ongoing Debate Over Physical Releases

Physical releases on the Nintendo Switch 2 have been controversial over the past year. Many collectors prefer games fully stored on cartridges, but publishers have increasingly shifted toward code-in-box versions and Game-Key cards.

As a result, some fans may feel underwhelmed by this release. However, if demand remains strong, a more complete physical edition could still be released in the future.
