During the annual Pokemon Day presentation celebrating the franchise’s 30th anniversary, The Pokemon Company unveiled a brand-new Mega Evolution for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The upcoming Mega Dimension DLC will introduce Mega Garchomp Z, giving the iconic Dragon-type a fresh and powerful new form.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A already stands out as one of the most ambitious entries in the long-running series. Set in an open-world version of Lumiose City in the Kalos region, the game moves away from the traditional turn-based system and instead introduces real-time battles to the mainline Pokemon games. It also marks the return of the fan-favorite Mega Evolution mechanic, which had been largely absent from recent titles.
Mega Evolution Returns to Kalos
The reappearance of Mega Evolution was one of the biggest highlights of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The game brought back several popular Mega forms from previous generations, including Mega Gardevoir, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Houndoom. In addition, the title introduced a wide range of brand-new Mega Evolutions, such as Mega Starmie, Mega Dragonite, and unique Mega forms for each of the Kalos starter Pokemon.
Now, the upcoming Mega Dimension DLC is expanding the roster even further with the introduction of Mega Garchomp Z.
A New Form for Garchomp
Mega Garchomp Z features a noticeably different design compared to the original Mega Garchomp seen in earlier Pokemon games. Its wing-like claws now sport sharp spikes, and its horns extend into more dramatic shapes, giving it a more intimidating appearance.
One of the most significant gameplay changes is its new typing. Unlike previous versions of Garchomp’s Mega Evolution, Mega Garchomp Z loses its Ground typing when it transforms, potentially altering its strengths, weaknesses, and battle strategies.
Players who own the Mega Dimension DLC will be able to obtain the Mega Stone required for this transformation through a special Mystery Gift event, making it relatively easy for trainers to add this powerful form to their teams.
More Z Mega Evolutions Arrive
Mega Garchomp Z is not the first new variant introduced in the DLC. Pokemon Legends: Z-A has already debuted other Z Mega Evolutions, including Mega Absol Z and Mega Lucario Z.
Altogether, the base game and DLC have added more than 40 Mega Evolutions, with some Pokemon receiving multiple variations. For example, Raichu now has both Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y forms. The process of obtaining Mega Stones has also been streamlined, as many of them can be purchased directly from shops in Lumiose City.
Ranked Battles Continue to Add Rewards
The introduction of Mega Garchomp Z follows other post-launch additions to the game. In a previous competitive season, players could obtain the Sceptilite Mega Stone by reaching Rank S in Ranked Battles. Later seasons lowered the requirement to Rank U, making it more accessible.
That reward marked the first time Mega Sceptile became available in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The Pokemon itself can only be encountered in wild zones located within Hyperspace Lumiose, adding another layer of exploration to the game.

Pokemon’s 30th Anniversary Brings Big Announcements
The Pokemon Day broadcast was packed with major announcements celebrating the series’ 30th anniversary. In addition to new content for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, The Pokemon Company also revealed Pokemon Wind and Waves, the upcoming tenth-generation titles, along with the first look at their starter Pokemon.
Fans also received updates on Pokemon Champions, a competitive-focused title scheduled for release in April, as well as teasers for special anniversary events in Pokemon GO and the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
With new games, DLC expansions, and anniversary celebrations on the horizon, Pokemon is entering its third decade with plenty of excitement for trainers around the world.
