As Diablo community manager Adam Fletcher explained during the livestream, this boost is aimed at players who are returning in Season 6 and find their gear turned into "Legacy" status. "This gives them a way to recover some of that and immediately get back into it," Fletcher said.
Leveling to 50 and acquiring new gear isn't a time-consuming task in the current state of Diablo 4, but the boost is especially valuable for players who haven't yet completed the Altars of Lilith collection. When the game launched, players spent hours tracking down the 160 Altars scattered across the world to earn Renown and small stat boosts. Afterward, Blizzard made Altars of Lilith account-wide, meaning players only needed to complete the collection once. The new boost unlocks all the Altars for returning players who missed out on them previously.
In addition to the Welcome Back boost, Blizzard is planning a free trial for Diablo 4 that will allow players to try out the new Spiritborn class introduced in the Vessel of Hatred expansion. More details about the boost and the free trial will be shared in an official blog post later in the week.
During the livestream, Blizzard also acknowledged that the Spiritborn class is currently very overpowered and widely played—over 60% of players are using it. However, Blizzard confirmed they won't nerf the class until Season 7 in January. In the meantime, they will buff the original five classes to help balance the game.
In GameSpot's review of Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, we noted that the expansion offers "a great entry point for lapsed Diablo 4 players" and successfully revitalizes the entire game, making it feel fresh again.
