In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, players have the chance to capture the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo and obtain both of its Mega Evolution items — Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y — by completing a special post-game Side Mission called Project M.
Before unlocking this mission, you must first finish the main story and watch the end credits roll. Once that is done, you can access a Mystery Gift online that activates the mission chain leading to Mewtwo.
This guide will walk you through exactly how to start Project M, reach Mewtwo’s location, and successfully catch it.
How to Start Side Mission: Project M
After clearing the main story, press X to open the menu and navigate to Link Play. Select Mystery Gift, then choose Get Via Internet. Look for Project M in the list and confirm the download.
Once this is completed, two important things will happen:
- The Project M side mission will be added to your game
- You will immediately receive Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y
The game won’t give you much direction after this, so the next steps are all about heading to the correct location manually.
Where to Go to Find Mewtwo
Open your map and fast travel to Lysandre Café, located just outside Wild Zone 7. Enter the building, which will lead you into Lysandre Labs.
Once inside, walk straight ahead to the red elevator doors and select B3F. Upon arriving, a cutscene will trigger inside the main laboratory chamber.
During the scene, you’ll be given a choice. If you choose to release the security locks, Mewtwo will be unleashed, initiating the legendary battle.
Tips for Catching Mewtwo
After defeating Mewtwo in combat, you’ll be able to attempt to capture it using any Poké Ball. Don’t worry if your first attempt fails — the battle will instantly restart, allowing you to try again.
In our attempt, Mewtwo was successfully caught using an Ultra Ball after two tries.
Here’s what to expect during the encounter:
- Level: 70
- Type: Psychic
- Weak to: Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks
- Moveset: Psychic Psycho Cut Amnesia Aura Sphere
Using Pokémon with Ghost- or Dark-type moves will give you a major advantage in this fight.
Mega Mewtwo X vs Mega Mewtwo Y – What’s the Difference?
Once captured, you can Mega Evolve Mewtwo into two different forms depending on the stone you choose.
Mega Mewtwo X
- Gains a Psychic/Fighting typing
- Has massively increased Physical Attack
- Excellent for close-quarters and offensive strategies
Mega Mewtwo Y
- Remains Psychic-type
- Focuses on Speed and Special Attack
- Very powerful but has low Defense, making it a true glass cannon
Choosing between the two ultimately depends on whether you prefer physical dominance or special attack speed.
