Aurora, ‘the Witch Between Worlds’, the latest League of Legends champion, will hit the Rift in patch 14.14.
This is due to arrive on Wednesday July 17th 2024.
Riot said in a press release that Aurora is a ‘bespectacled, freckled ginger bunny witch, a Bryni, a rabbit-like type of vastay’, who can hop in and out of the spirit realm when she chooses. She finds the mortal realm and its sensory information overwhelming, so often escapes to the spirit realm.
“Born to a vastayan Bryni tribe, in the Freljordian village Aamu, Aurora grew up with the unique ability to see the veil between the spirit and material realms,” it read.
“Aurora struggled to connect with her peers, instead finding companionship with nearby spirits. Determined to learn more about the spirit realm, Aurora left her village to travel across the Freljord.”
In a champions insights post, Riot also said that Aurora managed to befriend Ornn, in the lore. They also said that originally Aurora had an ult that could steal other players’ ults, but that this felt too evil for her, so they created Sylas instead. Aurora instead has witchcraft that is more about spirituality than paganism or dark magic.
They also said that Aurora is inspired by badgers and wolverines.
“Vastaya are naturally magical creatures descending from the Vastayashai’rei, originating from what is now known as Ionia,” the post continued. “Somewhere down the line something magical (and probably a little weird) happened and now the vastaya we know have mixed animalistic properties (really, it’s when the magic in the Vastayashai’rei stopped enabling them fromshapeshifting). The result is vastaya, who are inspired by real-world animals.”
Riot on Aurora’s autism and how the team created her
Riot said: “In our world we have a term to describe Aurora: She’s autistic. But Runeterra doesn’t have aterm to describe her. She’s just Aurora.
“Many members of Aurora’s dev team, and of Riot overall, were inspired to share some of their experiences as people on the spectrum. Because for them she was a chance to bring a part of their lives to the game they love.”
“It’s impossible to fully encapsulate the autistic experiencebecauseit’s a spectrum, because everyone experiences it so differently,” said senior narrative writer Elyse “apothecarie” Lemoine.
“There are a lot of things that a lotof us do that we wanted to capture, like toe walking, which is really common! But we know that it’s not something everyone does.
“And we wanted to kind of capture not just the common autism experiences a lot of us have had, but the most basic part of having autism. Which is that the way our brains work—the way we view the world. It doesn’t match the expectations that others have. And that’s really what we want to shine through for Aurora. She shouldn’t meet expectations.”
Aurora LoL Champion Abilities
Passive: Spirit Abjuration
Wayward spirits are drawn to Aurora.
If Aurora damages an enemy 3 times with her spells and attacks, she will perform an exorcism, dealing a percentage of the enemy’s max health as magic damage and freeing a spirit that will empower her healing her every second, and enter Spirit Mode, granting additional movement speed for a short duration.
For every additional spirit following Aurora her bonus movement speed will increase.
Q: Twofold Hex
Aurora fires a blast of cursed energy in a direction, dealing magic damage to enemies hit and marking them with spirit energy.
Recast: Aurora ends the curse, drawing back in the spirit energy to herself, dealing magic damage to enemies passed through based on their missing health.
W: Across the Veil
Aurora hops in a direction. Upon landing, Aurora enters the spirit realm, becoming invisible and entering Spirit Mode for a short duration.
Takedowns on enemy champions within 3 seconds of damaging them will reset the cooldown of Across the Veil.
E: The Weirding
Aurora unlocks a window to the spirit realm, which sends out a blast of spirit magic, dealing magic damage in an area and applies a decaying slow over a short duration.
The force of the blast knocks Aurora back slightly.
R (Ultimate): Between Worlds
Aurora unlocks a rift to the spirit realm, sending out a pulse of spirit energy that deals magic damage and slows enemies hit. This ult is inspired by getting lost in the Lost Woods in Zelda games, in that you try to get out of the ult, but then are just teleported back to the centre, unable to escape.
The area merges with the spirit realm for a short duration, giving Aurora an empowered Spirit Mode doubling her bonuses while she’s in it, and allowing her to travel from one end of the area to the other by crossing the threshold.
Any enemies attempting to cross the threshold are slowed after being pushed back toward the center of the area.
Aurora can recast this ability to end the effect earl
